Initial Wealth Investment
A company’s R&D team is rated as it’s rated.
A player may invest in that company’s R&D by “spending” Wealth bonus to recruit a better team.
Each 1 Wealth spent in this way tacks on 2 weeks to the start of the process, but adds +1 to either its Research or Craft (Prototype) skill. A player may invest any number of Wealth Bonus points in this way, but the investment remains locked in the project until the process is complete. This is called the player’s Initial Wealth Investment.
This investment may be taxed by Set-backs during the process. Initial Wealth Investment minus Taxes determines profit. It’s a risky business.
Additionally, a player may invest up to 2 Wealth per month to either decrease the time it takes by 1 week per Wealth invested, or decrease the DC by 2, but increase the time by 1 week per Wealth Invested. In both cases any Wealth so invested remains locked in the project until the phase is complete.

Basic Understanding of Concept
If starting from scratch roll Research at DC25.
If using captured tech roll Research at DC15.
This process takes 1 month.

Engineering the Components
If starting from scratch roll Research at DC30.
If using captured tech roll Research at DC25.
This process takes 1 month.
Depending on the size and sophistication of the device or object, this may take multiple months, each requiring a roll.
Each Set-back (failing the Research roll) permanently taxes the company or character 1 Wealth bonus and tacks on 1 additional month (and subsequent Research roll) to this process.
Each Break-through (exceeding the DC by 5 or more) decreases the next DC check by 3.

Making the Prototype
If starting from scratch roll Craft (Prototype) at DC30.
If starting from blue-prints or successfully Researched components roll Craft (Prototype) at DC25.
This process takes 1 month.
Depending on the size and sophistication of the device or object, this may take multiple months, each requiring a roll.
Each Set-back (failing the Craft roll) permanently taxes the company or character 1 Wealth bonus and tacks on 1 additional month (and subsequent Craft roll) to this process.
Each Break-through (exceeding the DC by 5 or more) decreases the next DC check by 3.

Once the Prototype is Made
Roleplay the sales or roll Profession/Diplomacy/other appropriate skill at DC15 (+1 per Set-back, -1 per Break-through) to sell or lease the design to a manufacturer.
Selling the design nets you a one-time Wealth bonus of D6 times your initial Wealth Investment minus Taxes from Set-backs.
Leasing the design costs you 1 permanent tax from your Wealth Bonus, but gradually garners you 3 times as much as your Initial Wealth Investment, minus Set-backs.
